Today, and everyday, we’re committed to building a better future for fashion. As it stands, the retail industry is the second largest polluter in the world, with approximately 12.8 million tons of apparel being sent to landfills each year.
By powering both the sharing and recycling economy, we’re on a mission to reduce fashion’s global footprint, one rental at a time.
Here’s a look at just a few of the sustainability-related efforts we’re making today for a better tomorrow.
Revive by Rent the Runway

WHAT IT IS
Revive is our new name for our growing program that’s committed to extending the life of garments. When styles are no longer able to be cycled through the shared closet, we either make them available for purchase through our Sample Sales and participating partners like Nordstrom Rack, or donate them to nonprofit organizations including FabScrap and Dress for Success.
WHY IT MATTERS
By buying items through Revive, you’re not only extending the life cycles of garments, but you’re supporting RTR’s Recycling Economy as well.
WHAT’S RTR’S RECYCLING ECONOMY?
Our Recycling Economy keeps clothing and textile waste out of landfills for as long as possible. When you buy a previously worn or rented garment, you’re raising the average number of times clothing is worn and helping shift the future of retail.

Our Partners in Plastic Recycling

WHAT IT IS
We use plastic polybags in an ongoing effort to protect and preserve our garments. However, you may have noticed that with every shipment we ask you to return the plastic your items came in so we can recycle them. Well, that’s because we do!
Thanks to our partnership with Trex, our plastic polybags get recycled into wood-alternative building and decking materials. As one of the largest recyclers of plastic. in North America, Trex reclaims and repurposes more than 300 million pounds of polyethylene plastic film each year.
WHY IT MATTERS
Through this partnership, we’re helping reduce the amount of plastic that gets thrown away annually, and instead, transforming our polybags into durable, high-performing products that last for years and years.
Since our partnership began in 2017, we’ve recycled over 365 tons (and counting!) of polyethylene.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
By returning your plastic, you’re contributing to our efforts in sustainability. So, next time you’re making a return, send the plastic back, too!

ONLY THE BEGINNING
This is just a glimpse at the steps we’re taking. We’re not perfect, but it’s the beginning of our journey to becoming an even more sustainable business and a way for you to live a more sustainable life.
