For many of us, getting dressed in 2020 looked — and felt — quite different. From embracing the “fashion mullet” (more on that below), to getting dressed up just because, this year has brought some of the most surprising fashion moments yet. Here’s a look back at our year in rentals.

As the world changed, so did the way the RTR community got dressed. Here’s a break down of the most popular trends throughout the year:

In fact, in a recent community survey, over 30% of you told us you’d describe your 2020 style as the “fashion mullet” –  business on top, PJs on the bottom:

While IRL hangs weren’t happening this year, the RTR community was more (virtually) connected than ever. You tagged us in over 41,000 photos on Instagram. We loved seeing all your rented ‘fits!

And, you did your part to make the world a better place:

Did you know that we send our used poly bags to our partners at Trex who, in turn, recycles them into wood-alternative building and decking materials? Make sure to return your poly bags with your rentals! Learn more here.

For us as a company, 2020 was a year of evolution, reflection and action. Here are some of our biggest moments:

  • Joined Aurora James’ 15 Percent Pledge and allocated $1M to support Black designers as a part of our long-term strategy to fight systemic racism and make Rent the Runway, and the wider fashion industry, more diverse and anti-racist. ⁣

  • Launched all-new memberships to better meet the changing needs, budgets and lifestyles of our community. Learn more about our new plans here

  • Improved our membership experience by introducing a faster way to swap, increased plan flexibility and even better member perks!

  • Continued to build a more sustainable future for fashion through our partnership with thredUP and our Revive by Rent the Runway collection of pre-loved designer styles.

Thank you for being a part of the RTR community, here’s to 2021! In the meantime, what bold fashion choices should you take on in the new year? We have the answer, and it all depends on your zodiac.
