There’s just something about dressing for fall. After months of bare legs and sun-kissed shoulders, it feels like our bodies are practically begging for the equivalent of a fashion hug: the soft texture of a knit sweater, the added weight of a layer, the instantaneous chic that comes with the addition of a bold accessory. Enter: Fall’s top trends.

When it comes to styling, there’s no better advice to be given than from our resident fashion team. From reimagined classics to new and novelty, read on for team RTR’s fall favorites, and be prepared to heart, because when it comes to a rented closet, the outfit equations are quite literally endless.

”I focused on culottes(ish) and their triumphant return from the ‘70/’80s, like a phoenix rising from the ashes.”

The culotte is making a robust return this fall. Dress them up with a tall boot or down with an oversized tee and your favorite sneakers. For a more polished, equestrian-inspired look, opt for a great oxford shirt and riding boots. Going for an elevated vibe? Dress them up with a great pair of pumps and your favorite black turtleneck.

Suzanne Smallshaw, Director of Fashion & Styling

”A yummy, comfy house dress? Yes, please.”

My favorite thing about dressing for fall is the ability to play with so many different pieces, colors and textures. As the weather cools, you can play with layers and autumnal color combinations with coats, knits, dresses, skirts — you name it. This is the time to play with your wardrobe.

When you don’t want to even think about what to wear, the house dress is the perfect go-to for fall. It’s not only comfortable and warm, but also really chic. Pair it with a slipper for an effortless look.

James Newell, Senior Buying Director

This fall season is all about statement sweaters. Who knew the biggest trend for fall would fit so nicely into our WFH lifestyle?

For life above the keyboard, I love knots with texture and novelty details. Opt for styles with a unique sleeve proportion and utility details. Ulla Johnson and Baum und Pfergardten are nailing this trend.

The indoor/outdoor jacket is perfect for making a statement while dining outside this fall, or can easily translate to a strong directional look while on a call with your colleagues. Tibi and Sandy Liang are brands that I look forward to seeing each season. Both take iconic styles and shapes and turn them on their heads with mixed media or sport elements.

Blaire Walsh, Style Director

”I’m all about the gold chain craze right now. The more gold accessories, the better!”

From assorted chains and chain details, pendants, herringbone necklaces and charms, it’s all about mixed gold layering. A gold chain is right on trend for fall and is the perfect accent piece to take you from day to night.

Fall gives us the opportunity to explore and layer clothing. There’s an art to layering, and I enjoy the challenge of figuring out what prints and colors work best with what. Cardigans make a great layering piece for the colder months and are such an easy throw on to instantly dress up leggings or denim for an at home comfy but stylish look.
