Meet Cheryl Leung, the founder and designer of Sau Lee — the elegant and sexy evening wear brand to have on your radar this social season. Founded in 2014, Sau Lee has quickly become a go-to label for ultra-feminine dresses and gowns that are perfect for weddings, galas, date nights (or whenever you need an extra dose of glamor).

Inspired by her Hong Kong heritage, Leung’s design ethos is centered around creating pieces that are “dedicated to celebrating femininity.” Each dress is designed to complement the figure and enhance the hourglass silhouette while combining tailored, romantic and luxurious qualities.

Recently, we caught up with Leung to chat about her favorite pieces and where she finds her design inspiration.

RTR: Tell us about your brand, Sau Lee, and how it all began.

Cheryl Leung: It all started in 2014 with a small collection. I found a tailor to sample the collection and I was pitching to retailers around the world.  It took me a little while to nail the Sau Lee aesthetic that we have today, but I am super proud of what the brand has become.

RTR: Describe the brand in 5 words or less.

CL: Feminine, confident, sexy, playful and modern.

RTR: What are your inspirations for your most recent collection?

CL: Hong Kong is definitely one of my main inspirations for the collection and the brand at large.

RTR: We know you love them all, but what is your must-rent piece from the collection?

CL: The Joyce Dress is definitely a must-rent, I named it after my mom! It’s a modernized take on the traditional cheongsam. It’s made from this gorgeous Chinese jacquard and has hand-twisted frog buttons. I also love the Georgina Gown! It has supportive bust cups and ruching which makes it super flattering and pretty.
