The season of bundling up usually goes something like this: it’s finally cold enough to wear your favorite coat in your closet (you know the one!) and you dive right into the whole winter thing head first. That is, until you’re a few weeks deep into the chilly weather, bored of your go-to outerwear options and suddenly finding yourself panic-Googling cheap flights to the nearest destination above 70 degrees. (Not that we know from personal experience or anything.)

Sound familiar? While we’re guessing you don’t have an endless rotation of chic coats (or closet space!) on hand to keep the cold weather wardrobe boredom away, the Closet in the Cloud does. Below, we rounded up a few of the best winter coats that are anything but basic.

On the Bright Side…

The fastest way to brighten up one of those dreary winter days? Keeping warm in a hot hue. There’s no need to put away the bold colors just because the temperatures are dropping. Shades like lavender, hot pink, orange and yellow add a pop to neutral closet staples when it feels like your outfit just needs a little something

…Or the Wild Side

From spots to stripes to snake prints, animal prints have been enjoying a moment in the spotlight for several seasons now. A leopard- or tiger-print tailored coat is a classic for a reason — but why not  add an edge with an of-the-moment cow print or fun, colorful take on leopard?

Go for Faux (Fur)

Baby, it’s cold outside — but you knew that already. Luckily, these (faux!) fur jackets are here to keep you as toasty as you are chic. Opt for all-over fur for extra warmth, or try out that fur-accented look you’ve been seeing on your IG feed.

Puff Piece

Equal parts practical and stylish, the puffer jacket is likely already a staple in your closet. Why not try a twist on this utilitarian fave and upgrade the look with leather, color blocking or punchy prints?

Mad for Plaid

Speaking of prints, that brings us to one of our perennial favorites. Checks and plaids are simply unrivaled when it comes to achieving those cozy vibes. Go for a classic wool coat or slip into something a little less structured that will basically feel like wearing a blanket… but make it *fashion*.
