Winter weddings are underratedly romantic: Gently falling snow! Candles! Mood lighting! They’re also the unsung heroes of wedding guest fashion. While dressing for warm weather nuptials is generally pretty straightforward (florals, pastels, sundresses and sandals galore), choosing an outfit for a winter wedding presents an opportunity to try something different.  Think: cozy velvet, a moodier take on florals or lots of lace to bring the drama.

Read on for our edit of must-rent winter wedding guest dresses that take the guesswork out of dressing for cold weather I do’s — all that’s left for you to do is choose. (Though we can’t promise it will be easy!)

Velvety Soft

We’d be hard pressed to think of another fabric that feels like your coziest PJs, but looks like a million bucks. Adding an edge via a leg-baring slit optional (but encouraged!).

Moody Florals

It isn’t news that florals for spring are less than groundbreaking, but florals for winter? An entirely different story. These are a far cry from your typical “April showers bring May flowers” blooms, and we mean that in the best way possible.

Cut to the Chase

Baring more skin isn’t exactly the first thing we’d think of either when the temperatures outside are plummeting — but hear us out. A strategically placed cut-out that shows a little skin while keeping the rest of the look relatively covered up is the best way to look hot and stay warm.

Flirty Lace

There’s just something about lace that brings the romance — which is always welcome at a wedding. Add to the allure with a bustier detail, flirty ruffles or an off-the-shoulder silhouette.

Shimmer and Shine

Sparkles, shimmer and shine are holiday and NYE MVPs, but they look right at home at a winter wedding as well. Go extra glam by piling on the sequins, or opt for a metallic fabric with slightly subtler shine.
